My Mum once told me, “Sometimes people are lazy and just want to enjoy today but don’t look ahead.” She told me a story about an experiment where some scientists bring a kid into a room alone. The man gives him a candy and tells the kid if he doesn’t eat the candy, he will give him another one when he comes back after an hour. The first kid eats the candy but the second one doesn’t. Many years later, the researcher found that the second kid had better grades than the first one in school. It’s because the second kid knew what to do first and he could control himself. My mum was right. Sometimes we are we can only see what’s in front of us, forgetting about the future. I believe in looking at life through binoculars. To see things clearly, sometimes we need to look at them from a distance.
When I was in middle school, grade 8, one thing that we all hated was to recite the texts in the English book, especially me. I am no good at it. So I would always leave homework until the day before the due day. I enjoyed doing other homework but not English homework. At first, it was relaxing. But when the last day came, I had to stay up in order to memorize all the texts before the next day or I would not be able to repeat it to our English teacher. I always felt regret but I still didn’t want to change. I just didn’t want to recite the texts, I really hated it. However, I did the same thing over and over again. I didn’t think I had the choice and I almost gave up.
One day, I saw an article on the internet about an author who felt the same way I felt faced with doing my English homework. In 2003, she was diagnosed with ALS. She knew that the disease was killing her and one day she would die in a very painful way. However, she had hope and thought she still had a choice in her life. The disease brought pains to her. She could choose to give up and wait for the day to die, or she could chose to face it and see it in a different way and understand the life she was truly living. People may always think about the things right in front of them but miss the big picture. Seeing things from a distance, like using binoculars, helps us to understand them.
I compared my life with hers. She’s got a disease but what have I got? They are just some texts to recite. I realize that how weak was. I wanted to give up on English, but now, I believe we all have a choice. I need to work to improve my self-control and learn to do and see things a different way. People always meet different kinds of events and challenges, but we need to always look farther ahead. Sometimes it could be really bad but just don’t give up and try to see things from a distance.
This, I believe.
